Make Google Save You Money

The Internet is a great place to find deals on just about anything. There are also a lot of surveys and freebies just waiting for you take them. iGoogle is a great way to do that!

All you have to do is set up free Google account. If you have one already you are one step ahead.

After you get your account set up go to www.google.com/ig. This is the iGoogle page. There will probably already be the defualt content on the site. You can choose to add another page to the iGoogle also. I have three pages. One page for online deals. One for keeping track of my favorite forums. And one for monitoring the stock market.

iGoogle get it's content from the rss feeds you specify. Click the "add content" button near the top right and go to town. Add the URLs of the sites you want to monitor. This will work with any site that has rss feeds enabled. Some great site for finding online deals are:

Slickdeals.org
Absurdly Cool Freebies
Woot!
Tech Bargains
XP Bargains
Digital Deal

That is only a summary of all the deal sites there are in the expanse of the interweb. If you have a favorite be sure to share it. If we get enough submissions I will make a comprehensive deal list.

What made you need to search for "os x slow on startup?'

Anonymous said...

Well. Actually 10.4 has been taking quite a long time to load up. The load screen used to take a few seconds. This time it took about a minute. Not only was the load up slow but when it completed loading it hung for about 30 seconds. Have any ideas?

You could get a windows computer.... *shrug*

Maybe you should address the fact that OS X has a slow startup time for you, instead of spending all your time saying what's great about Macs and what sucks about Windows. I've got nothing against Macs, but you should at least write a real review that talks about both the benefits AND the problems of the product.

Actually I have had 10x more problems with my numerous PCs then with my Mac. I understand your sarasm. I don't imply tha Macs are infallible. They just don't have nearly as many problems as a PC.

I support Mac products because they are innovative in a field where most problems are solved my making a complex solution. Macs have simple solutions.

The fix for that startup problem took about 40 seconds and I am running great.

As for that review you mentioned:
PCs are great for work and fixing.
Macs are great for everything (a little weak on the gaming side).

It's just isn't that simple. I'm not sure what "PCs are great for fixing" means, but it's ignorant and daft to say that PCs are good for working and Macs are good for everything. There are many examples. For instance, PCs have the Office suite. Macs have TextEdit, and won't have the Office suite until later in the year. If all you're going to say about PCs and Macs are that PCs suck and Macs are awesome, it's not really worth saying, is it?

I guess I will just say this. I used to feel the same way as you. Bitter at hypocrites who bashed PCs without acknowledging the disadvantages of Macs.

Here is my conclusion after running both systems.

Macs are better.

I don't pretend that Macs are infallible. I do state that Macs have less problems.

I guess this is one of those things that if it has to be explained to you, you just won't get it. I hope that doesn't offend you. I don't mean it to.

Do you think there is anything wrong with that?

Actually, if the post actually had said that, maybe it would have been better. But it DIDN'T say that. And you acknowledge the fact that you won't concede anything because you cropped the screenshot so it doesn't say anything about OS X startup times.

I cropped the screenshot because I end up in pointless conversations like this one. You are not going to convince me that PCs are better or that I should even acknowledge their uses. I believe, from experience, that Macs can do everything PCs can and better.

Why should I promote a product that is inferior to another. Why waste the time?

Why should I concede to your point. I know your point. I have argued your point before. Now I have a more complete perspective and I believe that Macs are better.

I have had PCs and I have one right now. I have had more problems with it then I care to deal with. For you to prescribe a "Windows" computer to fix my slow startup is ridiculous.

The instability and complexity is unwanted and counterproductive. I can run all my apps from my Mac. I have only had one problem (the slow startup) and I fixed it easily.

When did I say you should promote PCs? I just said you should acknowledge the benefits AND the problems with both products, because there are definitely benefits and problems with both.

And it wasn't ME that suggested a Windows computer. That was the other anonymous. I expect he was probably suggesting it as a joke.

I should also point out that most PCs are also error free for the first couple months of use. Most products are that way. And most computer users, PC and Mac alike, end up having to reinstall their respective OSs on a yearly/biyearly basis.

I have to respectfully disagree that Mac users (as a whole) need to reinstall their OS.

At that, I do concede to your point. I should discuss the benefits of a PC if I am going to promote Mac. However, I don't have a lot of time to do that. I am one of those people who post for 30 minutes before they sack out, worn out after work.

You seem to have a good idea of what should be addressed in an unbiased review. Would you be interested in writing an article doing what we have discussed here? Perhaps, if you are busy as well you could do the PC side and I would handle the Mac side.

Just an idea.
